Land to Sea invited multidisciplinary artist Lauren Kim to create a calendar that welcomes in the Year of the Horse. This print features a photograph of a horse Lauren took during a trip with her dad to visit and document the lives of her grandparents in Greenville, Alabama.
“For obvious reasons, it felt fitting to build a design around this image for Year of the Fire Horse, but it’s personally significant to me because my dad was born in 1966, the last time the Year of the Fire Horse came around. It is through my grandparents' bold decision to immigrate, and my parents support that I get to pursue my life as an artist today. I am forever grateful.”
Lauren Kim is a photographer, director, designer, and friend of Land to Sea. Her work is marked by dynamic composition that feels textural, movement-heavy, and experimental, frequently adding and subtracting layers of colour and texture to reveal the final form.
“There are many moments in my process where I am totally unsure of where my decisions are going until I’ve arrived at something that resonates. I took this photo on my Contax and printed it in the dark room - the motion blur was created by me moving the frame with the photo paper around underneath the enlarger for a few seconds to create a softer, more abstract image.”
As we step into the Year of the Fire Horse, a year driven by intense energy, passion, and momentum, Lauren captures and shares a wish to move steadfast with optimism and strength with whatever may come our way.
